Today Jacob told me he was feeling pernicious. This was in response to me telling him to stop fighting with Ethan. He said he learned the word from "Word Girl." (PBS show)

Later, when he was chanting "Hungry, hungry!" at me, I told him that if he could use the word pernicious, then he could ask me for food with a full sentence. He said, "Mommy, it's per-nee-shus, not per-nih-shus." Apparently I pronounced it wrong? Or else Word Girl did, but it was probably me.

I think the word is actually precocious. Don't you?

  3. Paul - Sadly, I think he did mean pernicious. I think Word Girl referred to the villain in her show as pernicious. When Jacob used the word, I asked him what he meant, and he said, "Like you fight all the time." So, he didn't get the meaning from the context perfectly correct (as in deadly, harmful, injurious), but he was on the right track. I am grateful he wasn't actually pernicious to Ethan. Actually, that might have been how he used it: "I'm pernicious to Ethan." Hmmm. It's hard to remember the exact quote sometimes.

  4. Paul - Unless what you meant was that he was being precocious... which he was... Oh, I get it, hah! I'm kind of slow sometimes...

  5. Am familiar with the medical terms of pernicious anemia, pernicious malaria, and pernicious vomiting.

The definition in my medical dictionary is: Destructive; harmful; denoting a disease of severe character and usually fatal without appropriate treatment.

I might have to start watching that show! Sounds fun!
